Breast cancer awareness is increasing across the United States as medical staff, scientists, survivors of the disease, and other interested parties fight for its cure. Through early intervention and treatment, international research, fund-raising efforts, signature campaigns, and ongoing health education, someday breast cancer will hopefully have no place in our world. However, it will always have a face.
The Face of Breast Cancer in the Lafayette area is a travelling exhibit that will premier locally in October 1997 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer Today Support Group is responsible for the development of this photographic essay. We are a breast cancer advocacy group, dependent on our personal resources, and committed to education the community and supporting individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. Our goal in presenting this photographic essay is to raise public awareness as to how breast cancer impacts our community.
Approximately 4,100 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Indiana during 1996. 960 women in Indiana are expected to die of breast cancer this year. There are additional statistics we could quote regarding this this disease. However, when breast cancer strikes you or your family, statistics don't mean a thing.
There is strength in knowledge. We have a deep desire to equip our community with the necessary tools to fight breast cancer--by removing the mask of this disease and giving it a face. We invite you to join us in this endeavor.
