What is Breast Cancer Today?

Co-founder Claudia Kruggel explains:

In  Indiana alone newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are estimated* to be 4,000 per year with the estimated deaths from breast cancer to be nearly 1,000 in our state each year! That  means that 25% of diagnosed  breast cancer in our state will result in death from the disease.

We use our funds for breast cancer education and awareness.

We created the 'Indiana Face of Breast Cancer' as a photo essay exhibit to  both bring awareness and  educational materials to the public. Each year we try to add more faces and  stories to the exhibit. Each face  costs us $200 to produce. We have 4 new applications for the year 2000. The  faces include survivors &  those who have died. There is also an educational opportunity to the exhibit  which allows us to present  material on what is available in our community for every aspect of the  disease from mammograms to  support groups to medical groups to e-mail sites. We also use our funds for  educational purposes. For the  most part we absorb the costs to educate ourselves and have never been  compensated for any of our efforts.

We would like to use Breast Cancer Today funds to make purchases for more  educational materials such as  slide presentations and breast models. We have also made Breast Cancer Today  contributions to support  educational forums such as luncheons and local fund raisers that provide  mammograms for women in the area  who can't afford them.

Whenever asked, Barbara White & I travel educating women all over Indiana. We are  happy to do so but we have  never been compensated in any way for this service. Some of our expenses  include babysitters, meals, gas,  copy printing, postage and lost wages. We are both trained & licensed to  conduct Breast Self Exam Classes.

I bring this information back to the community through Guest Editorials and  lectures. When I return from the  Texas conference, the Journal & Courier has asked me to consider writing  about it for their paper. I am also  contributing a chapter for another author's book on cancer on the Radiation  Oncology experience.
