Progress Report on Malawi Assistance -- along with excerpts from letter from Gladstone Chonde
March 26, 1998
As many of your are aware, we are shipping a 20 container to help a few cliniics in Malawi. One is Malakia Clinic in in the capital city of Lilongwe--it is operated by by Gladstone Chonde and his wife Alice who have gone through many trials over the years. They have just lost their daughter Jane.
We have collected many life sustaining items already for the clinic including blankets, food, medicine. The container shipment has been delayed, but it should be leaving in the next two months. The shipment is part of a US government aid program for which they are paying the shipping cost of the container. For a report on what work has already been done please click here
Because medicine is so desperately needed, we have decided to ship some immediately through conventional methods. Bill Jahns, pastor of the Salt Lake City congregation has supervised this. Every two weeks a box of medicine for treating malaria, AIDS, diarhhea will tied the Chonde's over until the container leaves the Twin Cities.
If you would like to help with this process, please contact me. One of the great blessing we have is that we can buy medicine at 6% of wholesale!. We plan to purchase as much as we can just before the container leaves for Malawi.
Thanks for your interest.

Here's the latest letter from Gladstone and Alice Chonde:
March 12, 1998
Thank you very much for your letter dated February 1, 1998.
Gladstone and Alice ChondeWe have received cards of sympathy about Jane's death -- many from the US and one from Canada. Thank you for letting others know about Jane's death.
More than you could know, more than words can show, your kindness, love and sympathy are a source of comfort in our family. God has blessed us using you.
When I told my children any intention to leave our former affiliation, one of them said, "Dad, you will be miserable to leave because of the many friends you have. They will leave you alone in times of trouble. I told him, "God will not leave me alone if I work hard to follow Him after Jane's death. It's when Alice and I know we belong to a big family of believers. We have many true friends all over the world."
The hope we have of getting a container from you is more exciting to us. It is even more exciting to hear of the donation of a FAX machine. We never dreamed we would be given a FAX machine in our life. The delay does not affect us because of the excitement we have of expecting the things we thought we can't have.
We still have problems with telephones here. There was a change of telephone numbers in Lilongwe. Our new number is 730413 but it hasn't started working yet.
Maybe by next month it will be working. Greetings to Beverly and to you. Our our love to you.
