Rebecca's Well for Malawi

UPDATED February 16, 2009

Rebecca's Well has a permanent spot for the sign. This was completed on December 21, 2008.  Everyone is happy and benefiting from the generous gesture by Park Tudor Schoo in Indianapolis, The Indianapolis NE Rotary Club and LifeNets.

UPDATED October 2, 2008

This sign noting the fact that one of LifeNets' wells was a group effort is held by Rebecca McClure.  Fourteen year-old Rebecca initiated a fundraiser that raised $1000, a considerable start for a community well in Lilongwe, Malawi.  $1500 was contributed by my Indianapolis NE Rotary Club.  We are leaving for Malawi today and will place the sign at the well site.  We thank everyone who contributed to completing this project.

UPDATED December 3, 2008

On October 11, 2008 we went out to the well and put up the sign and saw it in operation. The location is the Chilinde district of the capital city of Lilongwe.  It serves 150 neighbors who draw water from it every day. Victor and Beverly Kubik went out to visit the well and the people on whose property its on.

Park Tudor student Rebecca McClure and her classmates are interested in raising money to build a new water well in either Malawi or Zambia Africa, and they got their campaign off to a great start at a special party on January 5th, 2008.  Rebecca and her friends dressed up for a dance party and enjoyed a “winter wonderland” evening of fun.

The party was in honor of Rebecca’s 14th birthday, but instead of gifts, she requested that her friends consider making a donation to the LifeNets well project. Rebecca told her parents, “I’m very blessed to have everything I need. I don’t want any gifts; instead I want to help build a well in Africa. I can’t imagine having to walk miles every day to carry water home for drinking, cooking, and bathing!” A new well will change the lives of an entire community because it means they will have a supply of fresh water readily available, cutting down on waterborne illnesses, and making the lives of the women and children who fetch the water every day much easier.

Rebecca was surprised and delighted to raise about $1,000 toward the well project at the event – nearly half way to their goal.  The students will do other fund raising activities with their school service club, the Panther’s Care Club, and hope to raise the balance of the funds by the end of the school year.

Rebecca's parents live in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her mother Cathy is LifeNets treasurer as well as member of the board.

Thank you, Rebecca!
