A VAN FOR WADE

Wade Malwitz

The Wade Malwitz Fund reaches its $15,000 goal on September 7, 2004!

April 11, 2004

LifeNets International and the Minneapolis Chapter of LifeNets are stepping up to the challenge to provide Wade Malwitz with a much-needed van.

Wade is now 47 years old and has been dealing with Multiple Sclerosis for over fourteen years. For Wade, each day is a painful struggle. Have you ever slept on your arm wrong and woken up with it tingly, stiff, and sore?  Multiply that feeling by ten and apply it to your entire body—now perhaps we can begin to imagine what Wade goes through on a daily basis. Wade can remember how when he was healthy, he didn’t give a second thought to little insignificant tasks like brushing his teeth and taking a shower. Now, simply getting ready every morning has turned into a several-hour ordeal.

Wade Malwitz is a strong, handsome young man who was living the American dream. He had a blossoming career as an accountant, a new home, and three beautiful children. Who could imagine that fifteen years later, he would be lying in a ditch with a turned-over wheelchair at his side, unable to lift himself off the ground.

Because Wade’s body could no longer handle full-time hours and a long commute, he had to leave his career for a part-time position at the local Wal-Mart. Despite his daily pain, Wade is a valued, hardworking, and loyal employee.  Ironically, Wade’s strong work ethic is what led him to have the accident in the ditch. Wade has an old van that is equipped with a lift for his wheelchair. Unfortunately, this van is quickly nearing the end of its lifecycle and often breaks down. When this happens, Wade is forced to brave the steep ditches around house and drive his motorized wheelchair to work and errands. One day, his wheelchair tipped and Wade fell down into the ditch. He lay helpless in the ditch yelling for help until someone happened to spot him.  We can all be thankful that someone happened by that ditch that day.

Wade is a brilliant mind and kind heart trapped inside a body that no longer works.  Every day he struggles to maintain his independence and, amazingly, contribute to society through numerous volunteer activities. I wish all of you could have the opportunity to meet Wade, as his determination and faith are inspirations to all who know him.

As friends of this inspiring man, we would like to help Wade get a new, more reliable van so he doesn’t have the stress of caring for an old vehicle or the physical danger caused by breakdowns in Minnesota’s challenging climate.  After availing local resources to help get a van and have it customized with a lift and hand controls, we still need to raise $15,000 for a van for Wade.  This is extremely important in allowing him to continue to live independently.

We are here today to ask for help.  Whether you can donate two dollars, a thousand dollars, or even a prayer, we are grateful for anything you want to give.

Thank you.
