Mandan, ND - Sprint Triathlon and Youth MiniSprint for LifeNets
By Karen Halvorsen
On Sunday, September 25, 2005, 54 participants from many locations across the United States and Canada gathered at the Mandan Community Center for a fundraiser to benefit LifeNets, a not-for-profit organization benefiting local and global communities. How and why did one local woman, Pam Redline, rally all these people to get involved in this physically grueling event?
“Blue Iron Duke,” aka Rich Tolbert and his friend Marc K. Seeley, Sr., who served as a course monitor, drove nearly 45 hours from their home in Harrisburg, PA. What was their motivation? The friends are co-workers at the U.S. Postal Distribution Center in Harrisburg, PA with the goal of participating in a Triathlon in each of the 50 states. This one in Mandan, ND wasn’t exactly easy to locate. Rich’s initial search on the Internet didn’t give any listings for Triathlons in the state of North Dakota. So, Rich started calling bike shops in North Dakota. One bike shop owner, Dennis Kemmeset of Epic Sports, knew Pam Redline, owner of Redline Fitness & Personal Training, was organizing a mini version of a Triathlon. When Rich called Pam, both were surprised and delighted to team up for the event. North Dakota makes the 23rd state that Rich and Marc have traveled to for a Triathlon.
Medals were presented by Anthony Jurak, founder and owner of Jurak Corporation Worldwide, which produces and sells the health supplement, JC Tonic. Jurak and his staff have been involved in this fundraising event since it began in 2004.
Door prizes and other donations were provided by the following sponsors:

Many thanks to the friends, family members and volunteers, especially Rod and Tracie Frieje, who supported all the participants by organizing the food! Sue Block’s YMCA Swim Team had so much fun volunteering that they all want to become participants next year. So, Pam Redline now has the task of finding replacements for thes e helpful volunteers. Any additional community support will be greatly appreciated.
After the race, one participant asked me, “So, what is LifeNets all about?” I explained that LifeNets is a not-for-profit organization which supports individuals and communities around the globe to become self-sufficient. Victor Kubik, founder of LifeNets, gave a video presentation on Saturday night, September 24, 2005, at the Best Western Seven Seas hotel in Mandan, ND. More details about the organization’s current needs and how you can donate or participate in upcoming events, can be found at: www.lifenets.org
Remember to mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Sprint Triathlon and Youth MiniSprint which will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2006!
