Since 2001, through the kindness and generosity of Rock Valley Christian Church (rockvalleychristianchurch.org), The Scharpen Foundation (www.scharpenfoundation.org) as well as other friends in Southern California, we have been able to maintain a soup kitchen and orphanage in Vinogradov Ukraine.  This has been one of our most heart-warming and satisfying projects as we have seen not only love and care shown to throw-away children, but we have seen them go on to study, learn professions and become responsible citizens.  This work has made a difference in the lives of these children who were headed for crime and worse.

The work is done by the Light of Love Mission directed by Vasyl and Irina Polichko who have no children of their own, but who have been "parents" to many many disadvantaged and vulnerable children. They run a soup kitchen as well as a foster home for orphans.  Their closest assistants are Vasya and Maria Tomaschuk who are foster parents to a group of nine boys at the orphanage called "Siloam."  Vasya and Maria were married a few years ago and now have a little son named Daniel born to them on November 24, 2012. Photos follow below.

We have also been able to have groups of young people come over from the United States during four different summers to help with a day camp where we have taught English, crafts, games and more.   I will have a report with pictures and stories of very enthusiastic participants after I return from Africa at the end of January of the most recent trip.  Please come back.

Here is an letter from Director Vasyl Polichko telling of some of last year's highlights and thanking the sponsors of this program.

Report

of the charitable work by

Christian Brotherhood "Light of Love"

The charitable soup kitchen continues its work on track with its mission to provide daily meals for children who are orphans, who come from disadvantaged families. That is for about 20 children. We not only provide physical food, but provide food for the spiritual development of the children. To do this we have a Bible lesson before each meal with prayer.

Additionally, nine children who have no parents to care for them live in our building “Siloam” which part of the “Light of Love.”

One of them, who is called Adalbert is nine years old, He just started living with us in March 2012. Foster care is provided by the Light of Love mission.

Two boys who are 16 and 17 years old are now going to a trade school in Vinogradov.  One wants to become a master locksmith and to work on agricultural equipment.  The other wants to become an electrician and wants to receive the high-rated “C” category.  We also have another one age 19 who is studying at the medical faculty at the Uzhgorod Government University.

Alyona Muravjova continues studying in her third course at the Mukachevo Government Institute in the faculty for foreign languages. The Light of Love mission pays for her studies.

On our property at the soup kitchen, the Light of Love conducts a children’s day camp. In July 2012 we had 45 children come. The camp operated from 9:00 to to 6:00 pm.  We provided food five times a day, Bible lessons, English language lessons, various games, excursions and swimming in the Tissa River.

This year we once again had help from Americans – brother Oleh Kubik and his entourage.  Children did crafts with their hands such as making little wooden boxes.  Oleh Kubik provided the materials and the instruction on how to make them. The children were very enthusiastic about making these boxes which were left with the children as a remembrance of the good work done by our American friends. Also, the entourage of brother Oleh provided instruction in the English language. They not only talked with the children; they also sang in English. The children even now continue to sing these songs.

We are very thankful to the family of Scott and Carolyn Scharpen, for their church, the Rock Valley Christian Church, and their friends from Southern California as well as everyone else who  takes interest in this material and spiritual help for our children.

May God reward you who provide sincere kindness and love for these children of Ukraine.

With respect,

Light of Love Brotherhood

Vasyl Polichko
