Children's Blankets and Bed Rolls needed for Malawi Clinic

July 21, 1997

Many children as well as adults seek help from Gladstone and Alice Chonde at the Malakia Clinic which they operate in Lilongwe, Malawi.

We have been approved to send two 40 foot containers of life-sustaining humanitarian aid to them. The U.S. Government will pay shipping as part of a foreign aid program.

Along with medical supplies the Chonde's have mentioned that they have a special need. Many AIDS orphans (children whose parents have died from AIDS) seek help from the Chonde's and they could really use some blankets as the children need a bed roll to on sleep on at night. Any blanket would do, but a sleeping bag style, perhaps quilted on the bottom with a light cover for the top and a small built-in pillow would be really nice. Perhaps with strings on one end so that it could be rolled up and tied.

Anyone wishing to help with this please us know.

We had hoped to ship a container this month (July), but because of difficulty with communications with Malawi it has taken longer to get our container documentation completed. We hope to ship now in September. This will give us more time to prepare the shipment which will leave from the Minnepolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area.

Dyanne Dick from the Seattle area will coordinate the blanket project. If you have any questions please contact  me.
