LifeNets Volunteer Helps With Wheelchair Repair

"I Was on My 5th Roll of Duct Tape!"

That's what my renter Jim Hightower told me when he showed me his dilapidated "Drive Silver Sport 2" wheelchair which had become unusable over a year's time.

As a volunteer for LifeNets, I immediately thought of its life-enhancing Wheelchair Program and asked Jim if he'd like for me to ask for help.

The LifeNets database listed a wheelchair in Aurora, CO, only about 2-1/2 hours from Canon City, but it turned out to be a child's size.

Jim suggested that instead of searching for a new one, we just buy the seat and back that he needed and he could repair his broken down one.

Wheelchair parts are readily available on several websites, so we located the best deal. I called Vic Kubik, he was pleased with the cost, and LifeNets sent a check.

The whole process took less than a week. Jim said it took him only two hours to repair the chair. He graciously allowed me to take a picture of him (and his dog Biscuit) after I told him people want to see the wheelchair all right, but they really want to see the person. I told him the uplifting pictures would inspire LifeNets readers to support the outstanding program through prayers and donations.

Those needing wheelchair help might find the repair route a good option.

Jim said, "My gratitude and thanks to LifeNets. I appreciate this program for underprivileged people!"

He uses the chair only in the house where he doesn't need to use armrests and footrests. It enables his ulcers to heal by not walking.

As a LifeNets volunteer, I regularly get to rejoice in reading about "another successful wheelchair story" but this time I experienced compound joy actually participating in one!
