Final Report on Hoosiers For Honduras

October 26, 1999

As hurricane Dennis loomed off the coast of the U.S. we were reminded of another hurricane last year. Hurricane Mitch devastated much of Central America with Honduras being especially hard hit.

Seeing the serious need in the Honduras, local businessmen Darrell Toney and Art Evans rose to the occasion, offering both their time and resources. Along with their efforts, they offered a challenge to central Indiana to keep the relief effort going for as long as was needed.

Hoosiers responded to those needs in many ways. Locally, Hoosiers For Honduras was formed to help meet the needs of those so hard hit by the storm. Donations of over $4,000 poured in to the Hoosiers for Honduras fund which was managed by Sarah Osborn and the United Church of God.

Dr. Martin Dixon, who has traveled repeatedly to the Honduras to lend a helping hand, reports that Hoosier donations have been put to good use. Some of the money is going to buy food and clothing. Some of it sponsored a school milk program and part of the funds will also help rebuild the building where the school was located.
