From the Philippines: Update on Jed Sy and Jong Pilapil

September 12, 2021

Many have asked about the status of Jed Sy and her brother Jong Pilapil who are serving life sentences on Mindanao in the Philippines.  They have now been incarcerated for 18 years.

Jed Sy

Jong Pilapil

This is a heart-rending story of a brother and sister who were associated with a family trafficking in drugs. I visited them both on July 14, 2013 and heard their story. I have posted their story at https://lifenets.org/philippines/jedsy/computers.html.

They have both appealed their case to Supreme Court in the Philippines but have been denied since 2015. Hence, their sentence, for now, is final. They had not been notified by their lawyer for five years and the case was archived.. Jong was devastated and Jed is coping with it.  We are still hopeful and earnestly praying for both of them.

Pastor Gilos had not been able to personally visit them due to restrictions because of the current Covid-19 pandemic. He has, however, communicated with her via phone call through the prison office, where she is working as an accounting staff to help the financial management inside the facility. They are giving her regular financial assistance through the United Church of God to help her with her monthly food supplies and basic needs, including Jong Pilapil in the separate men's facility.

However, pastor Gilos visited Jed last March 21, 2021, during their Women's Month celebration. The Church was requested to be part of the meal sponsors and donated 75 packs of Jollibee meal (1 piecc fried chicken with rice and soda) for the inmates. The Mindanao elders and wives (Mr. & Mrs. Gem and Sarah Nagtalon and Mr. & Mrs. Manuel & Betty Valdez) visited Jed Sy’s facility.

They received and Certificate of Appreciation from the Facility Administrators. They were also given a short time to talk to Jed Sy, and we are thankful to be able to talk to her after a year under strict restrictions due to the pandemic.
